Chapter Five

Edward stretched lethargically and rolled his shoulders beneath the bedclothes, glorying in how warm and comfortable the world was. For several moments, his brain remained sleepy and content. He was in no rush to wake up properly. Reality could wait. He took a deep breath then let it out as a satisfied sigh.

With some reluctance, his brain went through its normal start-up checks. Day of the week—Monday. Alarm clock going off—No.

He smiled. So far, so good. He forced himself to open his eyes and peer at his bedside table. The brightly lit numbers proclaimed it to be just five minutes before his alarm was due to go off. Damn.

Edward turned his head on his pillow. The sight of Mark sleeping soundly next to him overrode any annoyance with the alarm clock. The wary quality Mark so often displayed when he was awake was conspicuously absent. He didn’t look delicate or angelic in the way Frank had while slumbering. Instead, Mark appeared peaceful and sated. It was an equally beautiful sight, spoilt only by the fact there wouldn’t be time for them to even have a proper conversation before he left for work, let alone indulge in anything more pleasurable.

Mark stirred, as if life had taught him the wisdom in being able to sense someone watching him. Edward regretfully turned his attention up to the ceiling, unwilling to disturb his submissive unnecessarily. Mark needed his sleep far more than Edward needed the possibility of a quick blow job before he raced off to the office.

Edward frowned slightly. He should have made time to speak to Mark about what he might do while his temporary master was out of the house. Mark liked having everything laid out with specific orders to obey.

A shrill sound cut through Edward’s thoughts. At almost the same instant, Mark threw himself into a sitting position and searched frantically around the room.

“It’s okay.” Edward reached out to both the alarm and to Mark, turning one off while simultaneously steadying the other.

Mark gawped at him, his eyes open very wide. It seemed to take him a few seconds to realise who he was sharing a bed with. The way he relaxed when he recognised Edward more than made up for the fact that Mark had almost given him a heart attack just a few moments before.

“It’s okay. You’re fine,” Edward said. He patted Mark on his good shoulder, not knowing how much physical contact his submissive could handle until he pulled himself together.

“I’m sorry, sir. I…” Mark shook his head. “God, you must think I’m an idiot.”

“No, I don’t. But any dom who treated you so badly an alarm clock could scare you this much was an idiot—and a hundred worse things, too.”

Mark dropped his gaze.

Any rush to get ready for work fled from Edward’s mind. He hadn’t taken an unplanned day off since Frank’s funeral. The firm would just have to survive without him. If they didn’t believe him when he phoned in with the flu, it would be their problem.
